Juicy Twists on Natural Hair

Juicy Twists on Natural Hair

Whether you are trying to get your hair to grow longer, or you are just too lazy to pull off your go to style, two-strand twists maybe the way to go. Twists are one of my favorite low-manipulation styles because of their versatility and how long they last. Typically, this style lasts me about two weeks, and I can retwist them when needed. During the first week, I usually wear the style completely down or in half up-half down style. And then the next week, I naturally wear the style in an updo.

The Secret:
The secret to getting the plumpest and juiciest two-strand twist is to start on stretched hair. I usually begin the style with freshly washed hair, and then do a heatless blowout. This method allows me to keep some length while not damaging my hair with excessive heat. When beginning to stretch my hair, I used this video to learn the technique.

When doing a heatless blowout, I like to use shea butter and my D.I.Y. Hair And Body Recovery Oil to moisturize my hair.

The Products:
As I stated before, I begin the process with a heatless blowout that I moisturize with shea butter and my D.I.Y. Hair And Body Recovery Oil. After the heatless blowout is completely air dried, which takes about two days for my hair, I begin the process. For my most recent twists, I used TGIN’s Twist and Define Cream which helped me create smooth and shiny well-defined twists. I also noticed that the product reduced my frizz and fly-aways. To complete the style, I use a small amount of Eco Style Gel to curl the ends of each twist.

The Process:
1.     The first step for juicy twist is to DETANGLE! Thoroughly detangled hair is key for perfect twists. It will make the twisting process so much easier.
2.     The next step is to section the hair. Section the hair using your fingers, rat tail comb or whatever tool you prefer. To be honest, I only part my entire head evenly when I have the time. Most times I only part the perimeter of my hair into neat sections because those are the sections that you can see. For the middle sections of my hair, I just make sure that each section has about the same amount of hair before I twist.
3.     Moisturize each section using a twisting cream of your choice. For my most recent twists, I used TGIN’s Twist and Define Cream which is enriched with Vitamin D, Vitamin E, and coconut oils, for smoother and long lasting twists. It also contains no parabens, sulfates, petrolatum, lanolin, artificial colors, or animal testing. For previous twists, I used my holy grail Eden Bodyworks Coconut Shea Curl Defining Crème.

4.     Divide the section you are going to twist into two equal parts making sure they are the same length. If the two sections are not the same length keep dividing and/or adding hair until they are. By keeping both sections of hair at equal lengths, it will ensure that as you twist you will only be twisting two sections of hair. The way the hair becomes tangled is when the sections are not even and random pieces of hair become twisted into other random pieces of hair within the twist.
5.     Start each twist with a braid and then turn the braid into a twist. This will keep each section of hair flat, tight and ensure that twists do not unravel from the root.
6.     Finally, once I finish each individual twist I take a small amount of Eco Style Gel and twirl the two ends together. This step will ensure that the twist does not unravel from the ends.

Sleep:
If you want to make this style last, it is essential that use either a satin pillowcase or satin cap to sleep. I usually use both because sometimes my satin cap falls off during the night.

Pro Tip:

A simple way to upgrade this style is by using hair cuffs to add a bit of stylish and funky fun.
