DIY Flaxseed Gel for Natural Hair

DIY Flaxseed Gel for Natural Hair

Gel is a staple in pretty much every curly girl's regimen. Homemade flaxseed gel is the perfect remedy for dry curly hair. This wonderful gel provides moisture, shine, and enhances curls. The only con about flaxseed gel is that it can be both hard to find, and expensive to buy. The good news? It’s easy and quick to make at home.

Now my flaxseed gel contains a little more than the basic recipe, but each added ingredient has a purpose. Oils work to stimulate healthy hair growth and provide essential nutrients to the skin. By infusing carrier oils with essential oils, an absolutely amazing product for all parts of the body is created. Essential oils work to stimulate the follicles in the scalp and encourage healthy growth. They also provide all sorts of positive benefits for the skin. So, here’s a super easy, cost-effective way to make your own flaxseed gel and see results. When it comes to natural beauty, having healthy skin and hair doesn’t have to cost a fortune.

HERE'S WHAT YOU’LL NEED

¼ cup of Whole Flaxseeds

2 cups of Water

1 oz of Castor Oil

1 oz of Olive Oil

5 drops of Lavender Essential Oil

5 drops of Patchouli Fragrance Oil (or a fragrance oil of your choice)

Small Pot

Mixing Bowl

Fine Mesh Strainer

Applicator Bottle

INSTRUCTIONS

1.     Place the flaxseeds and water in a small pot. Mix until the flaxseeds are completely submerged in water.

2.     Let the seeds boil on medium heat for approximately 10 minutes or until they create a stringy or mucus-like substance.

3.     As the mixture continues to boil, it will begin to “foam” and grow larger in size. Continue to stir the mixture to ensure that the flaxseeds do not stick on the pot.

4.     Remove from heat.

5.     Immediately take the hot flaxseed gel and pour through the strainer into the mixing bowl. You may need to shake the strainer a bit to get all of the gel to run through. Do not wait for this to cool at all. If you do, the gel will not easily strain.

6.     Add castor oil, olive oil, lavender essential oil and your fragrance oil into your flaxseed gel mixture. Stir until well combined.

7.     If the consistency is too thick, add some water to the mixture until you get your desired consistency.

8.     Allow the flaxseed gel to cool. This should take about 20-30 minutes.

9.     Pour the flaxseed gel into the applicator bottle.

HOW TO USE

The beauty of this recipe is that it can be used in multiple ways. Once a week, I use flaxseed gel to make my hairstyles last longer. It feels so good to use all-natural products of your own creation, and it works to stimulate and nourish the hair follicles, encouraging hair growth.

Your skin can become extra dry, flaky, or ashy from basically anything (hot showers, cold weather, and moisture-sucking indoor heaters). When this happens, use flaxseed gel to rejuvenate your skin. Use it to exfoliate the skin by mixing the gel with 1 teaspoon of sugar and 1 teaspoon of honey. Gently massage the skin with the mixture, and then rinse with warm water. Or for softer and clearer skin, apply the gel over your face and leave it up to 30 minutes. Rinse and spray your face with rose water.

THE BENEFITS

Olive Oil: If you want longer, stronger, healthier hair that shines, use olive oil. Olive oil acts in a way that strengthens the hair follicles and shaft so that they’re less prone to damage and breakage, including split ends. Olive oil also strengthens and softens, helping to treat dry, damaged hair while also exfoliating and even bringing out the color of your hair. The properties in olive oil are gentle and can be absorbed quickly by your skin, making it an excellent natural moisturizer. Unsaturated fats and Vitamins A and E are the beneficial properties in olive oil and key factors in why olive oil heals dry skin on your face and other areas that often lack natural moisture

Castor Oil: Castor oil has been an age-old remedy for hair and skin related issues. It is an elixir for beautiful hair and supple skin. Castor oil contains Vitamin E, proteins and Omega 6 & 9 that are the key components responsible for good hair and skin. It helps in the reduction of hair fall, premature greying of hair, fights any scalp related problems along with accelerating hair growth. For your skin, be it pigmentation, acne or aging, castor oil is the solution of it all.

Tea Tree Essential Oil: Tea tree oil is an amazing natural beauty product that should be a staple in any woman’s beauty collection. It can be used for a number of hair and beauty problems. Tea tree oil is a great natural choice for cleansing both hair and skin because it won’t cause damage or dryness. In hair, tea tree oil can be used for daily cleansing, hair growth, dry scalp, and dandruff. Additionally, tea tree oil has antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal properties to fight and prevent infection in the body.

Lavender Essential Oil: In hair, lavender oil can be used to promote growth, prevent hair loss, and control dandruff and scalp acne, hair growth, dry scalp, and dandruff. Lavender oil has anti-inflammatory properties, which is a major plus for dry, itchy skin.
